Frequently Asked Questions in Counselling and CBT
What is Counselling?
Counselling is a type of therapy that involves talking with a trained professional to help you work through your personal challenges. The goal of counselling is to help you understand and address your concerns, and to develop strategies for coping with them.
What is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)?
- Exposure: A technique that involves gradually surfacing yourself to situations that cause fear or anxiety. For example, you might have anxiety about a presentation to a room full of people or spiders.Â
- Journaling: Also known as thought recording, journaling can help you become more aware of your thoughts and feelings. You can make lists of your negative thoughts, and replace them with positive ones which is evidence based.
- Mindfulness: A meditative practice that involves focusing on your inner thoughts, breathing, sounds, and specific areas of your body.
- Role-playing: A technique that helps you practice social skills or improve your communication skills by enacting the same behaviour you will encounter in a real situation.Â
- Values clarification:Â A technique that helps you identify your true priorities in life.
- Problem-solving:Â A technique that helps you learn to cope with difficult situations.
- Relaxation exercises:Â A technique that helps reduce stress and relieve pain.

My unique approach to Therapy by Hannah
I am a firm believer that the approach to therapy is not a “one size fits all” which is why I use a blend of CBT and Counselling, depending on the support you need to get you on the front foot of your mental health journey with me.
Â
I know many people professionally and personally who themselves have struggled with their mental health and why I decided to work Therapy. Individuals often fear that seeking therapy is a sign of weakness and failure but in actual fact, taking the next step and acknowledging you may need additional support shows how strong a person isÂ
We don’t highlight the importance of mental health enough in England. The NHS has long waiting lists, we have a stoic approach to life’s challenges and this needs to change. The world is gradually opening up more on mental health but there is so much more to do!
Is Therapy by Hannah right for me?
There can be many different approaches to therapy. Those that specialise in specific areas such as substance abuse or PTSD, or those that have more of a generalist approach which is well suited for broad Counselling.Â
Â
The right therapist should make you feel:
- Comfortable and safe
- Unjudged
- Be able to be honest in the client and therapist relationship
- A “we click” feeling. Sometimes for unknown reasons, it just doesn’t work! If it doesn’t feel right, then the therapist probably isn’t for you.
Because there isn’t a “catch all” approach, I offer a free telephone consultation before any payment or contracts are signed. I don’t believe you should be tied into anything if there isn’t that “we click” feeling.
